This study looked at whether taking two types of “good bacteria” (called probiotics) — Bifidobacterium longum BB536 and Bifidobacterium breve MCC1274 — could help people reduce belly fat and improve their blood fat levels.
Who participated?
100 healthy men and women between the ages of 29 and 64 who were slightly overweight (but not obese) took part in the study.
What did they do?
Half of the people took a daily probiotic capsule for 16 weeks, while the other half took a placebo (a capsule with no bacteria). Everyone was asked to keep their usual eating and exercise habits.
What happened?
At the end of the study:
- People who took the probiotics had less belly fat and total body fat compared to those who took the placebo.
- Their blood triglyceride (fat) levels also dropped.
- The probiotics helped prevent the usual seasonal weight gain that often happens from summer to winter.
- No one had any serious side effects from taking the probiotics.
Why is this important?
Too much belly fat is linked to health problems like heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol. This study suggests that taking these two specific probiotics could be a simple, safe way to help reduce belly fat and improve health, especially for people who are slightly overweight.
Bottom line:
Taking B. longum BB536 and B. breve MCC1274 daily for 16 weeks helped healthy adults reduce belly fat and blood fat without changing their diet or exercise habits — and it was completely safe.
